DoHM proves that the only thing worse than straightforward nu-metal is pretentious nu-metal. The Lakewood quintet attempts many stylistic shifts on its debut album, Watch the Rivers Run Red, but ultimately the music sounds like a band melding 311 with Tool. It’s often painful to hear DoHM forcing square pegs into round holes, like the pairing of post-grunge and dub reggae on “Collective Tear” and “The Behemoth.”

For a band with progressive leanings and a killer rhythm section, the album blurs together like one long song. That’s because DoHM misfires on two key cylinders: First, singer Brian Noll’s vocals are layered to the point of overkill; on tracks like “The Jerk,” his melodramatic wailing detracts from the solid grooves. Second, the band’s stale riffs and predictable leads homogenize songs like “Meet at the Steeple.” DoHM’s songwriting needs to catch up with its ambition.

Yeah… Im going to go ahead and disagree with this review. DoHM is not nu-metal. The songs exhibit a caliber of songwriting, complexity and depth that the hundreds upon thousands of other metal bands, both local and national, lack or are afraid would be commercially unviable to explore. The songs are solid with plenty of hooks and catchy bits as well as technical tirades and blistering talent-flaunting, the selection of songs is varied and cover the gamut expected on a full-length album, and (to the credit of the reviewer) the previously aknowledged otherworldly rhythm section gives all aspiring drummers and bass players something to compare themselves to and cry in defeat. DoHM is progressive metal, not nu-metal, and that’s a pretty big distinction and a very unflattering label to attach to this album, which would group it with such unbearable bands as Linkin Park and Godsmack. You could probably call me biased on this issue given my prior connection to the band, but this review must’ve come from someone who thought St. Anger was “awesome to the max”. Pounding square pegs into circular holes is pretty much how anal sex was invented, and anal sex kicks ass. And so does DoHM.

  3. I wonder if this reviewer has ever been to a local show in all of his life. DoHM is the best thing to hit local music in years! The CD is an amazing mix of hard driving riffs and groovy melodies! Judging by the turn out at the House of Blues the other night I would have to say that there are a few hundred people who totally disagree with the reviewer. I do not understand where the reviewer gets that DoHM sounds like Tool, 311, post-grunge or dub reggae. DoHM does not sound like any band that I have ever heard before and to compare them to any of these stereo-types is an insult because they are an amazingly creative and unique band. Please do not go by what this apparently deaf reviewer has written, listen to it yourself and make your own judgement…I really think that you will also feel that the review should not be wasting time in the music field because he does not know what he is talking about.
