Ask any West Side Democrat about Dennis Kucinich, and you'll get two general responses. Theoretical lefties will tell you he's "right on all the issues." Lay Democrats offer some adaptation of the fighting-for-the-little-guy theme.

To the west of the Cuyahoga, these are notions as sure as the fecal count off Edgewater Beach.

Then ask for Kucinich's accomplishments over 12 years in Congress. The conversation becomes stuttering and rigid. Maybe there will be mention of how he lessened train traffic through Lakewood. But mostly there's empty, defensive air.

Such devotion to the unknown is perfectly natural. Voting tends to be a gut affair. We cast our ballots based on emotion and instinct, scraps of things we hear. They call it human behavior. It just doesn't work very well.

It's why Congress has an approval rating lower than the president's, but we re-elect the same guys 98 percent of the time. It's why downstate conservatives vote for those who denounce gays and praise Jesus — and push economic policies that cut the faithful's knees. And it's why we keep electing Dennis Kucinich. He tells us everything we want to hear. But 12 years later, we're no closer to holding those pretty things in our hands.

You have to hand it to the guy. He plays us like Guitar Hero on the remedial setting. For yellow-dog Democrats, he's a fiery voice for jobs and health care, a fearless antagonist of that vague and ominous enemy, the wealthy special interest. For the cerebral left, he offers plums and cherries like the Department of Peace and the impeachment of Dick Cheney.

We lap it up like Labradors. He's the one guy who gives eloquent voice to our wishes, burning denunciation of our foes. Because in the parallel universe of politics, we've come to believe that talking and fighting are the same thing.

But take a closer look at his record. Search for one slab of concrete he's laid, one shingle he's pounded to make any of this happen. You won't find any. That's because there's a very simple truth about Kucinich: The self-proclaimed "workers' president" has a serious aversion to work.

Defenders will tell you it's hard for one member to do anything in Congress. True. It's a battle royal among 535 clinically alarming egos, perhaps the most competitive workplace on earth. Talking does no good. At any given moment, there are 100 guys talking louder and prettier than you.

So you do as you would on any job: Put your head down, work your ass off, make your bones. If you want to be someone, these are the rules of the working life.

Senator Sherrod Brown understands this. He's quietly made himself an expert on trade. Should there be an Obama presidency, and Washington rediscovers the golden chalice of American politics — secure jobs that pay enough to live — the Senate will turn to him for advice. Finally, an Ohio guy with Ohio sensibilities will be in a position to do something about manufacturing.

But Kucinich has made himself an expert on nothing. He's the flighty co-worker who leaps from one task to another, boldly announcing how he'd do things better, then moving to a different task. You know how these people are viewed on your job. It tends to involve a lot of expletives. And it's the same way his own party views him in Congress. They just want him to shut up and get out of the way.

So when Washington eventually decides to do something about health care, education, consumer protection, the war, Kucinich will be on the outside looking in. He'll have no more say in crafting these bills than you or I.

But let's forgive him for a moment. Let's admit he's not cut out for work. His gift is his tongue, his flair for the dramatic, his ability to shine light on what ain't right. The smart fighter plays to his strengths, and a congressman can pack a lethal punch if he has the will.

There is no shortage of righteous battles in Cleveland. When National City was on its predatory lending spree, Kucinich could have been outside corporate HQ protesting every day, embarrassing executives into forgoing the serial rape of their hometown.

He could be at government construction sites, shaming public officials into abiding by their own minority-hiring laws.

He could use his staff to investigate corruption in HMOs, campaign finance, the Cleveland schools, the Mike White administration.

He could do what Brown has done — use his campaign funds to rent buses, so old people could buy cheaper medicine in Canada.

He could be the one Democrat who stands up every time Jimmy Dimora buys land from Sam Miller at five times its value.

To simply do one of these would have doubled his list of accomplishments over the past 12 years. But here's another truth about Dennis Kucinich: He's a George Bush kind of fighter — a guy who bravely speaks from the safety of the officers' tent, never risking his own sweat and blood.

Which means we've spent about $10 million — including his salary and federal subsidies of his presidential campaigns — so Dennis can create fabulous symbolism. Peace would be good, but the Department of Peace hasn't gone anywhere. Cheney may be a shirt tail relative of Satan, but he still has a job. Kucinich doesn't have the juice or drive to push boulders like these. He just plays like he does on TV.

Meanwhile, winnable fights — the kind that might put bread on someone's table — are ignored. The problem is that they require real work, real tenacity, real bravery. Dennis doesn't have the stomach.

So vote for him if you will. And when you're short on rent, short on the doctor's bill, take solace that somewhere, Dennis Kucinich is talking about having your back. He's sure to get around to it. Just give him another 12 years.

In the meantime, see if you can pay the heat bill with symbolism. That's worked pretty well for us so far, hasn't it?

  1. Dennis Kucinich has worked harder than any member of Congress to restore jobs to Cleveland and to America. The free trade agreements, which Cimperman would expand, are the reason there aren't more jobs. Under Kucinich, jobs will return. Cimperman would increase the speed with which jobs would leave.

Kucinich has a perfect voting record on human rights, civil rights, workers rights, peace and all the issues that matter to real people. Each month Kucinich is working on a new bill to help more of the people. An example of his good work is HR676, which he wrote and co-sponsored, the Conyers-Kucinich Universal Health Care bill.

It is sad that Cimperman lies on an ongoing basis about Kucinich's attendance record. Last night, the Patrick Henry Democratic Club of America recognized Dennis Kucinich for having the best attendance record in Congress. They have repeatedly recognized him for his 100% perfect record on human rights, civil rights, workers' rights, the environment, peace, jobs and the economy. Cleveland is very lucky to have the hardest working member of Congress, Dennis Kucinich.

  3. I may not live in Cleveland, but I sincerely disagree with you since I keep up with Kucinich's work.
So saving Cleveland's steel industry, and along with it thousands of jobs, is considered doing nothing?
So saving two major Cleveland area hospitals is nothing?
So it isn't anything to get 125 Congressman to vote against the Iraq war?
So it isn't anything to ensure that someone is actually there working for the rights of the workers?
    Interestign analysis.

  4. He helped introduce HR 676 (Single-payer, universal healthcare). He voted AGAINST the Patriot Act (Only 18% of the House members that voted voted this way). He has led the way on impeachment when others didn't have the balls or the guts. He visited Syria and had face-to-face dialogue with Syria's President. He didn't just say things, he went there. He's one of the few who is against clean coal (which is a stupid idea), he's one of the against nuclear power (which is a stupid idea), he supports real negotations rather than waging wars on countries based on lies (Hello, Iran. Hello, Pakistan. Hello, North Korea...)

Dennis is one of the few Progressives in Congress and the majority of those who don't like him in Congress are the same who didn't want him in the White House: the corporations, the lobbyists, and all their little bitches. Remember Muny Light?

  5. Another hit piece brought to you by corporate interests. I urge all Clevelanders to do some basic research on the Internet on Kucinich. Don't trust your hometown newspaper. They have an agenda to get rid of Dennis because he's causing so much trouble for Pelosi and company. Trust me, Pelosi deserves all the trouble she's getting. You Clevelanders are LUCKY to have Congressman Kucinich. Men of conscience are very rare. Men of conscience in politics are almost non-existent.

Elect Cimperman and they'll be no one in Congress to stand up and hold Bush accountable for launching a war on lies that's killed 4,000 American soldiers, wounded 20,000 more, wasted 3 trillion dollars from our treasury and caused the price of gas to explode. The consitituion is almost completely dead. Elect Cimperman and rest assured he'll be a good soldier to Pelosi and never say a word about it.

People like to poke fun at kucinich's Dept of Peace. We've had two insane shooting in the Chicago area this year. You've all been following the nut who killed the students at Northern Illinois U. We also has another psycho shoot and kill 5 women at a clothing store. It's about damn time someone brought up the idea of teaching peace and conflict resolution. This shooting stuff is becoming the norm. But what do you expect when a country believes in Pre-emptive war. What the hell is that anyway. Imagine instead of spending more than every other country in the world combined on defense, which the US does, we spent just 1% of that on Peace efforts. Oh no that's crazy. Our kids are going to grow up thinking killing innocent people is the norm. That's one sick world.

Don't just vote for Kucinich. Cheerish that he's your congressperson. My Congressperson is a coward on a You-Tube video running from a returned soldier who just wanted to ask him a question. What an embarassment! I'd give anything to have a Congressperson who introduced an impeachment resolution and tried to save our country.

  6. Blatant smear piece written by a Republican who has wet dreams of Cimperman getting nod. Sorry, last I saw it was 55% to 29% with Cimperman LOSING. Of course, if you convince enough of your demoralized crossover pals to show up, you could bring Cimperman over the top, right? WRONG, the numbers just aren't there. So you lose, again, and the one true American Patriot in our Congress, Dennis Kucinich, shall remain and continue to fight against those like your bosses, who told you to write what you did. Now go do more of what they wish.

  7. "Then ask for Kucinich's accomplishments over 12 years in Congress. The conversation becomes stuttering and rigid." Here's a bit:

In 2000, Dennis forced the reopening of two community hospitals that had already been closed. One of them was St. Alexis where he had worked decades earlier as a surgical technician. Throughout the decade of the 1990s, hundreds of other hospitals in inner-city communities across the nation were not as fortunate. St. Alexis remained open until 2003. The other hospital, Richmond Heights, remains open.

In 2001, while dozens of steel mills were being closed around the country, Dennis
rescued Cleveland's steel industry with a court order blocking the shut down of the blast furnaces. A new buyer emerged and now the mill Dennis saved is a flagship of an international steel company providing over 1,700 jobs. Thus Dennis was responsible for keeping the same flame burning over the industrial flats that had once illuminated the interior of the car he lived in with his family forty years earlier.

On July 11, 2001, inspired by the strength, leadership and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Gandhi and Christ, Dennis authored and introduced legislation to create a Cabinet level Department of Peace and Nonviolence. Domestically the Department will create programs to deal with domestic violence, spousal abuse, child abuse, racial violence, gang violence and the root causes of all violence in our society. The legislation is now backed by a national movement.

In 2002, Dennis wrote a thorough analysis of the President's flawed case for war and distributed it to all members of Congress. Despite being attacked and labeled by the media as unpatriotic and much worse, Dennis stood strong for what he knew was right and led 125 members of the House of Representatives in opposition to the illegal invasion of Iraq, warning that the forthcoming war was based on lies and that there was no proof that Iraq had anything to do with 911, with Al Qaeda's role in 911 and that there was no proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He also identified oil as a cause for the war and predicted if America went to war, it would soon be bogged down in house to house fighting.

On February 3, 2003 Dennis co-authored legislation HR 676 which he had previously proposed to the 2000 Democratic Platform Committee, to create a national health care system, Medicare for All. The legislation insures a universal standard of care and access that provides American people with the health care that every other industrialized democracy in the world makes available to its people. HR 676 has inspired a national movement which includes tens of thousands of physicians, hundreds of union locals and several state political parties.

In 2004, Dennis ran for President on a platform of peace, universal single payer not for profit health care and fair trade conditioned on workers rights, human rights and environmental quality principles, only possible through the cancelling of NAFTA and withdrawal from the WTO. For the second time he presented a plan to the Democratic platform committee for Medicare for all.

In 2006, Muny Light observed its 100th birthday, with a celebration of Dennis' role in saving it. Dennis was reelected to his sixth term in Congress and was chosen by his colleagues to be the chair of the Government Oversight and Reform investigative subcommittee on Domestic Policy. He has investigative jurisdiction over every area of the federal government with the exception of defense and homeland security, giving his subcommittee the broadest reach of any on Capitol Hill. The first series of hearings he called focused predatory lending schemes which destroyed people's home ownership dreams.

On December 12, 2006, after seeing that congressional Democrats had no intention of ending the war in Iraq, Dennis stepped forward to lead with a campaign for the Presidency. His platform is based on a new national security doctrine of Strength through Peace which turns the dominant neoconservative doctrine of Peace through Strength on its head. Peace through Strength led America into an illegal war against Iraq, with the acquiescence of leaders of both political parties. The Kucinich doctrine of Strength through Peace rejects unilateralism, preemption and first strike in favor of direct engagement, diplomacy, and adherence to international law. Dennis has given over 150 speeches on the floor of the House challenging the war. His national security doctrine, his courage in opposing the war and his votes against funding the war position him uniquely in the campaign for the Presidency. Hailed as "the darling of the Democratic base", this product of an inner city childhood has become the conscience of the Democratic Party and is a world leader for peace.

By 2009, having established himself as a truth teller and the one national leader with the strength to stand for the deep meaning of the Constitution of the United States, Dennis hopes to have realized his goal of reaching the top in national politics and being elected President of the United States, a goal described in his 10th grade autobiographical essay.

Today, many of the homes that Dennis lived in are gone: 2519 Carnegie was taken for a freeway. The apartment building on E. 107th, St. Clair, the apartment at 10712 St. Clair, the house at 1377 East 30th St, the homes in the Hough-Crawford community, the Brackland Avenue apartment no longer exist. The sites of the W. 73rd home and the apartment building on West 61st are now vacant lots. The house on E. 72nd St. is gone as is the house on East 72nd Place. 8110 Finney no longer exists, it was taken for a utility right of way. Parmadale no longer functions as a children's receiving home, but it does provide care for troubled youth. Uncle Frank and Aunt Marion's home on Kirton Avenue, the house at 589 E 101st and Uncle Pete's house on East 33rd are still there, as is the apartment in St. Vitus' neighborhood.

St. John's College, where Dennis had speech therapy, no longer exists. St. Peter's School has been closed as have Holy Name Elementary, St. Colman's School and St. John Cantius High School. Dennis still celebrates every St. Patrick's Day at St Colman's church and takes clothes each year to the St Aloysius Church and School for distribution to neighborhood children, in memory of Sister Leona.

    Domestic policy voting record:

Kucinich helped introduce and is one of 87 cosponsors in the House of Representatives of the United States National Health Insurance Act or HR 676 proposed by Rep. John Conyers in 2003, which provides for a universal single-payer public health-insurance plan.

His voting record is not always in line with that of the Democratic Party. Kucinich voted against the USA PATRIOT Act, against the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and was one of six who voted against the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Act. He also voted for authorizing and directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether sufficient grounds existed for the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

Kucinich criticized the flag-burning amendment and voted against the impeachment of President Clinton. His congressional voting record has leaned toward a pro-life stance, although he noted that he has never supported a constitutional amendment prohibiting abortion altogether. In 2003, however, he began describing himself as pro-choice and said he had shifted away from his earlier position on the issue. Press releases have indicated that he is pro-choice and supports ending the abstinence-only policy of sex education and increasing the use of contraception to make abortion "less necessary" over time. Since 2003 his voting record has reflected his pro choice stance.

He has criticized Diebold Election Systems (now Premier Election Solutions) for promoting voting machines that fail to leave a traceable paper trail, and posted internal company memos on his website in which company executives promised to deliver the 2004 Ohio election to Bush. He was one of the thirty-one who voted in the House to not count the electoral votes from Ohio in the United States presidential election, 2004.

    Foreign policy record

Kucinich has criticized the foreign policy of President Bush, including the 2003 invasion of Iraq and what he perceives as growing American hostility towards Iran. He has since voted against funding it 100% of the time. In 2005, Kucinich voted against the Iran Freedom and Support Act, calling it a "stepping stone to war."[28] The congressman also signed a letter of solidarity with Hugo Chávez in Venezuela in 2004.

He advocates the abolition of all nuclear weapons calling on the United States to be the leader in multilateral disarmament. Kucinich has also been a strong opponent of space based weapons and has sponsored legislation, HR 2977, banning the deployment and use of space-based weapons.

Kucinich advocates U.S. withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) because, in his view, it causes the loss of more American jobs than it creates, and does not provide adequate protections for worker rights and safety and environmental safeguards. He is against the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) for the same reason.

Kucinich is also in favor of increased dialogue with Iran in order to avoid a militaristic confrontation at all costs. He expressed such sentiments at an American Iranian Council conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey which included Chuck Hagel, Javad Zarif, Nicholas Kristof, and Anders Liden to discuss Iranian-American relations, and potential ways to increase dialogue in order to avoid conflict.

He believes the U.S. should move aggressively to reduce emissions that cause climate change due to global warming and should ratify the Kyoto Protocol, a major international agreement signed by over 160 countries to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by each signatory.

Kucinich and Ron Paul are the only two congressional representatives who voted against the Rothman-Kirk Resolution, which calls on the United Nations to charge Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with violating the genocide convention of the United Nations Charter based on statements that he has made. Kucinich defended his vote by saying that Ahmadinejad's statements could be translated to mean that he wants a regime change in Israel, not death to its people and supporters, and that the resolution is an attempt to beat "the war drum to build support for a U.S. attack on Iran."

Kucinich is the only congressional representative to vote against[39] the symbolic "9/11 Commemoration" resolution. In a press statement he defended his nay vote by saying that the bill did not make reference to "the lies that took us into Iraq, the lies that keep us there, the lies that are being used to set the stage for war against Iran and the lies that have undermined our basic civil liberties here at home."

In a visit to the rest of the Middle East in September 2007, Kucinich said he did not visit Iraq because "I feel the United States is engaging in an illegal occupation." Kucinich was criticized for his visit to Syria and praise of the President Bashar al-Assad on Syria's national TV. He praised Syria for taking in Iraqi refugees. "What most people are not aware of is that Syria has taken in more than 1.5 million Iraqi refugees," Kucinich said. "The Syrian government has actually shown a lot of compassion in keeping its doors open, and being a host for so many refugees."

Despite Kucinich's committed opposition to the war in Iraq, the Congressman did vote to authorize President Bush broad war making powers in the days following the September 11, 2001 attacks. The Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists, has been cited by the Bush Administration in its justification for suspension of habeas corpus in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and its wiretapping of American citizens under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Kucinich voted along with 419 of his House colleagues in favor of this resolution, while only one Congresswoman opposed, Representative Barbara Lee.

    What a do-nothing MFer...

  8. Well...Dennis Kucinich is the shit eh?

The previous posters (kucinich staffers?)manage to copy a database and paste it in Scene.
At least Pete's got proof in writing on his voting record.

Yeah VOTING RECORD. He voted! NO KIDDING! Think that piece of moss on the east side "tubby jones" would have not voted on the same legislation?

Kucinich knew LTV management was crap, but didn't warn the unions. So half of them got their jobs back after the fallout the ultimately became Mittal.

Kucinich knew St. Alexis and Deaconess Hospitals were no more than a soccer balls to kick around between "health care chains", but couldn't make the effort to protect it from greedy health-care administrators.

Kucinich knew Iraq was a bad decision, but waited knowing he could use it to HIS advantage.

Enjoy working for free for Dennis again.
