Cave drawings meet kiddie doodlings in Anne Kibbe's contributions to Zygote Press Gallery's latest exhibit, Material Studies: Process and Play. To assemble her pieces, she copied ancient caveman etchings out of a book, rounded up modern-day grade-school artwork, slashed all of it into little pieces, and made a collage out of the scraps of paper. "In overlaying the reconfigured cave drawings with the blown-up children's work, I take a look at the materials of the extremes," says Kibbe. "Whether it's the earliest, latest, or whatever, to take two extremes of the timeline is something you have to see in the visual medium."The exhibit also spotlights paintings, prints, and installation art by Andrea Joki, Margaret Kimura, and Alicia Basinger. Their common denominator: They were pieced together from "minutiae of daily clutter." "A lot of the work is understated and subtle. So instead of being leveled immediately, you can work your way slowly into it," says Liz Maugans, the gallery's director. "Even if it appears mundane or banal, you can see beauty in those intricacies." The exhibit is on display from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, or by appointment through Friday, March 28, at Zygote Press Gallery, 1410 East 30th Street. Admission is free.
